Match Report

Tamworth and Newport both came together this weekend and paid tribute to former England and GB Gold Medallist Imran Sherwani who sadly passed away this week.  Both sides honouring Sherwani with a one-minute silence and a game played in good spirit.

Both sides sitting mid table and it was a close encounter, the first half saw Newport dominate possession and through good build up play created several chances, Ethan Oxley in goal making some strong saves early on alongside Ravil Hirani who defended well and made a goal line clearance.  Tamworth lacking control of the ball dug in deep to defend brilliantly as the 1st half ended 0-0 – limited chances for Tamworth who were hanging on.

As the 2nd half started, the same shape of play began, with Newport holding the majority of the play without looking dangerous.  Mid way into the 2nd half Tamworth started to finally create some good passages of play down the wings and seemed to start to come into the game.  Tamworth stepped out and played a bit higher, making it hard for Newport to get out on 16’s and the game started to swing.  Tamworth creating by far the more dangerous chances and nearly moments through Holloway and Bowyer from Short Corner routines.

With just 2 minutes to play a neat move from Belson in the D, rounding the defender and squaring the ball to Hancox who found a foot, led to another short corner.  The away side mixed up the routine and Josh Andrews fired out to Simon Bowyer on the short side who hit a strike towards goal which flew into he near side in off the post and round the back board to the away sides delight – Tamworth won the game 1-0 – a some what smash and grab victory – but an example of you only win games by scoring your chances!

Man of the Match Ravil Hirani, but an incredible effort from the 11 men of Tamworth to take home the 3 points.
