Match Report

Tamworth backed up their opening day win with a well fought out win away at Cannock.

Often a physical battle and always a close game played out again in blustery conditions.  Cannock dominated for most of the 1st half and went 1-0 up through a neat bit of play.  Cannock had a few chances to go 2-0 up but through stern defending from Tamworth they stuck it out and kept Cannock out.

As the 1st half drew to a close Tamworth began to have more success through Holloway & Goode down the right-hand side, which eventually paid off as Dave Belson nicked an equaliser late in the half, pouncing on a short corner rebound off the keeper to make it 1-1 at half time.

Tamworth maintained that momentum in the 2nd half and went 2-1 up, Belson again with a wonderful goal – Cam Hancox with a great bit of play, and a well-executed flick in to he D which Belson had read and fired a 1st time shot into the bottom corner.

The game then swung back to Cannock, who pressed high and made it difficult for Tamworth – a notable mention to Tamworth defence, especially Dan Hutchins who made a real difference at the back.  This pressure eventual told with some good play leading to shot fired into the corner leaving Corden no chance – 2-2!

It appeared like the game would go Cannock’s way; they held possession and were camped in the Tamworth half.  However, as they had pressed too high, the ball fell to Belson, who held it up, played Holloway through into the D and a Short Corner was won.  A number of Short Corners in succession led to the eventual winner, Simon Bowyer slipping the ball to the left, where Belson pushed a shot, the Keeper saved it, it pinged into the air and Belson pounced to strike the ball as it flew over the keeper and defenders on the line and found the top right corner – what a goal, the hattrick and the victory!

A great game, which saw Man of the Match go to Hutchins for the superb defensive performance.
