Match Report

Tamworth Men’s 2nds continued their push for promotion with a comfortable victory at home to Stafford.

Tamworth came out of the traps nicely and played some really good hockey early on in the game holding the majority of the possession and they opened the deadlock early on through a neat bit of play and a Cam Hancox strike deflected off the keeper and Dave Belson was able to tuck the ball away into the empty net.  Belson turned provider to take Tamworth 2-0 up after some neat play on the left side from junior Josh Andrews and then it was Greg Phillips who played in Belson who drew the keeper, squared to Jez Holloway who dispatched a thunder strike into the bottom corner.  The game continued in Tamworth’s favour and before half time Belson had his second, Ian Wagstaff drove through the midfield with great skill, and played in Belson who pushed a first time strike low into the corner leaving the keeper with no chance.  A really solid 1st half performance.

In the 2nd half Tamworth dropped their level slightly and Stafford had a few opportunities to get on the score sheet, though good saves from James Miles when needed ensuring a clean sheet.  Jez Holloway found himself unfortunate to have 2 really good team goals ruled out through some controversy from the umpires.  However the game was finished off midway through the 2nd half as Holloway received the ball and played in Cam Hancox wide right who dove to the byline and pushed the ball to the awaiting Belson, who controlled the ball and calmly slotted into the net, earning his hat trick and ending the scoring as the home side won 4-0.
