Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI were beaten 4-2 at North Stafford in the penultimate game of the season.  Having secured second place the previous week Tamworth were keen to finish the season on a high and started brightly with Ryan Brisco finding space between the lines and Tom Hancox and Ben Popple seeing shot saved.  Midway through the half Tamworth took the lead with a pass across goal picked up by Tom Sperrink near the right hand post and his shot deflected into the path of Popple who finished from close range for his 22nd goal of the season.  Unfortunately this was as good as it got for Tamworth who looked in control of the game but were unpicked three times by North Stafford on the break before half time as Tamworth were caught out for not moving the ball quickly enough with James Miles in goal blameless for all three goals.

In the second half Town were keen to get back in the game and looked to have got a foothold as a penalty corner was slipped right to Ian Wagstaff by Sperrink and Wagstaff fired a low shot into the bottom left corner.  Again Tamworth shot themselves in the foot as a loose pass across the defence was picked up and the hosts restored their three goal advantage.  Unlike the first half it was now North Stafford who were controlling the game and although Tamworth huffed and puffed they never really looked like taking anything from the game and it petered out to a disappointed display and result.

Tamworth will conclude what has still been a hugely successful season at home to Finchfield next Saturday looking to finish on a positive note.
