Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI were in prolific form as they won 7-3 away versus Streetly Second XI on Saturday.  Looking to strengthen their grip on a promotion place Tamworth came out of the block quickest and after period of sustained pressure they opened the scoring with Ian Wagstaff firing in a drag flick which the keeper could only deflect into the top corner.  Streetly struck back immediately to equalise before Wagstaff struck again with another powerful flick from a second penalty corner.  The game continued to be far too open for Tamworth’s liking and Streetly had an opportunity from a penalty flick but this was scooped over the bar to give Town a reprieve.  This seemed to calm the visitors and from this point Tamworth put in a much more controlled display for the rest of the half.  Wagstaff was again involved in the Tamworth’s third when his pass from distance picked out Tom Hancox who dribbled in from the right and threaded the ball through the onrushing keepers legs to double Town’s advantage.  The final goal of the half demonstrated Tamworth’s improved play as a team goal saw the ball transferred from the right wing through the midfield before Cameron Hancox laid the ball into Tom Sperrink at the top of the D who rolled his marker before picking out the bottom corner to give Tamworth a 4-1 lead at the interval.

In the second half Tamworth were again guilty of overplaying but added to their lead with Wagstaff converting a penalty flick for his hat trick having seen his shot from a penalty corner blocked illegally by a defender on the line.  Tamworth’s sixth came in bizarre circumstances when Ryan Brisco’s reverse stick shot ballooned up with Tom Hancox showing quick instincts to volley high into the goal.  Further chances came and went with Ben Popple missing from the middle of the D before making amends when he drove in from the left beating three defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.  Streetly rallied late in the game with two consolation goals but the result was never in doubt.
