Match Report

The following day Tamworth travelled to Ashby with a heavily depleted side where they lost 6-2 to exit the National Vase in the second round.  They fell behind to a well worked penalty corner routine but were immediately back level with Ian Wagstaff firing the ball into a crowded D and it dropped to Tom Sperrink loitering on the post who stopped the ball before prodding it over the line.  Ashby were dominating possession and although Jacob Mallinder and Sam Turner put in spirited performances in midfield Tamworth were 3-1 down at the interval having finally succumbed to the pressure.

After the break the hosts extended their lead further with Tamworth continuing to be pressed back and little relief.  Ben Popple proved to be Town’s biggest threat from the left and late in the game he won the ball and played it into Sperrink who squared for Tom Hancox to score under pressure from retreating defenders.  Despite the defeat there were encouraging displays from Mallinder, Turner and competitive first team debutant Jasper Williams who all acquitted themselves well against a well drilled opposition.
