Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI lost the final game before the Christmas break 5-0 at high flying Nottingham Players as they slipped into the bottom two for the first time this season.  Tamworth had key players drop out during the week and when Ben Robins went down injured in the early stages this left Town with the bare eleven for the remainder of the game.  Despite this setback Tamworth started brightly with Tom Hancox slipping in Tom Sperrink for an excellent opportunity only for a loose touch from Sperrink to see the chance go begging.  Town competed for the majority of the first half, pressing and harrying Players high up the pitch but struggled to create clear cut chances and it was Players who took the lead and held a 1-0 advantage at the break.

After half time the hosts upped their game and despite the best efforts of Tamworth they scored at regular intervals to run out convincing winners with Tamworth looking blunt in attack.  Performances of note came from Tom Grimshaw in defence who looked to be positive with the ball throughout, Mitch Francuz in midfield who worked tirelessly to break down play and man of the match James Miles in goal, who made a string of excellent saves to keep the score respectable.

Tamworth will need to regroup and rediscover their early season form in key games in the New Year.
