Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI were soundly beaten 4-0 away against Derwent to record a fourth consecutive league defeat.  Town took a strong squad with some new faces included but were put under pressure from the start.  Derwent scored at regular intervals throughout the half with the fourth goal, a misjudged kick from goalkeeper James Miles which eluded him and the defenders on the line, summing up a thoroughly disappointing half.  Tamworth were limited to chances with Tom Sperrink’s first time strike from open play and Ian Wagstaff’s penalty corner effort both comfortably saved.

After the break Town looked more resolute and although they struggled for chances they stemmed the flow of opportunities for the opposition.  Sperrink saw a penalty corner strike deflect wide off the goalkeeper midway through the half and Tom Hancox couldn’t quite stretch to deflect in a late chance for a consolation goal but the main positive was the defensive resolve shown with J Haywood marshalling the back four and Mitchell Francuz and Chris Brealey aquitted themselves well on first team league debut.

Town have a weeks break before returning to action at home to Melton where they will look to pick up their first points since October.
